Tello vs JXD 528

JXD 528: A Sub $60 GPS Drone. Is This the Tello Killer?

The JXD 528 is an inexpensive brushed motor GPS drone. At only $59.99 it might be the cheapest GPS drone we have ever seen. How will it perform? Let’s find out.

Take a look at the JXD 528 from above.

What is the JXD 528?

The JXD 528 is a DJI Spark sized quadcopter. That is probably where the comparison to the Spark should end. The JXD 528 has a 2 MP 720p camera. It will take decent pictures and video, but you will have to fly slow and steady to get smooth video as it does not have EIS (electronic image stabilization) like the best in class Ryze Tello.

In addition to GPS stability the JXD also utilizes optical flow sensors to help keep it stable. You can fly the JXD 528 using Waypoints and it does have a return to home and a follow me mode. The JXD 528 is controlled exclusively using your smartphone.

The JXD 528 has a flight time of 10 minutes and a range of 200 meters. You will be able to watch the live video feed from the drone’s camera via an app on your smartphone.

Should You Get a JXD 528?

On paper, this is an excellent quadcopter. Once I finally got it in the air I was impressed. It was stable, the app was intuitive and the FPV camera feed was very good. Unfortunately, it didn’t like two different SD cards that I tried so I couldn’t capture live video.

The app of the JXD 528 is actually quite nice

Things took a turn for the worse when I tried to have the follow me. It made a B-Line for the house and crashed hard, landing on the roof. After retrieving it, it was no longer operable. It is hard for me to recommend this drone as it shouldn’t have responded this way and also should be a little more durable.

All things considered a GPS drone under $60 is a solid deal, but it really should work as advertised. I would recommend either a Ryze Tello or the Eachine E014 instead. The Tello is a super stable drone with multiple modes and the E014 is the best quad you can get for under $50.
