Getting Cinematic Footage with the iFlight Megabee

The iFlight Megabee is the nicest cinewhoop I’ve ever flown. Cinewhoops are all the craze right now. They bridge the gap between the professional photography drone and the fast paced FPV drone world. They tend to be a be complicated to build or expensive to buy.

The iFlight Megabee isn’t cheap but it is a high quality build and is definitely worth a look if you want to capture some unique cinematic footage and you don’t want the hassle of having to build one yourself. If you are interested in the Megabee make sure you use the code Drones6 to save 6%.

iFlight Megabee Cinewhoop

The iFlight Megabee Cinewhoop is a prebuilt, quality cinewhoop. The team at iFlight built this drone with the highest quality components. I’ve build a few cinewhoops myself and I’ve flown all the tiny RTF versions. This one is my favorite. The Megabee is in a class above the rest.

iFlight Megabee Specs

You can tell that the iFlight Megabee cinewhoop is a premium product the minute you open the box. It has both the look and feel of something that is high quality. The flight controller is a SucceX Mini F4 with a 35 amp all in one ESC. It can handle up to 6S but I recommend flying it on a 800-1300 mah 4S battery. The FPV camera is a Caddx Ratel with the 2.1 mm lens. It is paired with a VTX that is capable of 500 mw. The motors are the XING 1408, 3600 KV brushless and they are ultra smooth. It has a 146 mm wheelbase and weighs 255 grams without a battery. The bottom carbon fiber plate has a thickness of 3mm and a really nice design to handle impacts. iFlight even included a right angle USB mount so you can connect to Betaflight without having to take off the ducts.

It comes with a TPU mount for a GoPro 5-7. It will accomodate most similar action cameras but the new GoPro 8 doesn’t fit. I did a quick and easy modification so I could use my Gopro Hero 8. A quick trim from the top of the mount and a couple of zip ties and you are ready to rock with the GoPro Hero 8. It is my action camera of choice. You can order a mount for the Hero 8  and even a 360 camera if you’d prefer not to modifiy the one that it comes with.. The ducts are 3D printed and work well but don’t expect them to survive a hard impact. Especially in the cold. I know from experience. An extra set of ducts for the Megabee will set you back about $20.

Tips to get quality cinematic footage

I really enjoy flying cinewhoops. I can’t say I’m an expert cinematographer but the footage I get from these is always enjoyable. Here are a few of helpful tips to ensure you get quality footage.

  1.  Fly slow and smooth
  2. Maintain a consistent altitude
  3. Avoid angle/auto level mode
  4. Fly over and through obstacles
  5. Shoot at dusk or dawn
  6. Aim for a one take video
  7. Use stabilizing software if possible

When you are trying to capture cinematic footage any harsh movements will show up in the video. Plan out your shots and your lines. Angle, or automatic leveling mode often will introduce some of these movements so if you can fly in acro you should. Maintaining a consistent altitude will help also but don’t be afraid to go high or low for effect. As an added bonus throw in a well timed flip or roll when appropriate. Even sometimes hitting extreme angles will give you a nice effect.

Remember you are flying a drone. Get footage that you can only get with a drone. Fly over or through obstacles to add a nice touch. If you can shoot at dawn or dusk. You’ll get some beautiful colors and lighting that can enhance your shots. One take videos are awesome if you can accomplish them. Don’t be afraid to do some work in post processing. Utilize image stabilization software if you have it to help keep your videos smooth.

Is the iFlight Megabee the cinewhoop for you?

The iFlight Megabee is an awesome tool. It starts at $270 and you can save an extra 6% if you use this link and the code Drones6. There is even an HD version with the DJI digital FPV system that you can get. However if  you want a less expensive cinewhoop there are some options. I built a Tyro version for close to $100 and a custom build where you can mix and match your components. This Megabee is very nice and if you are ready to take the plunge of flying cinewhoops FPV then it is definitely something you’ll want to look into.
