The DJI Air 2S is on the way. We’ve seen the FCC filings and the leaks are already coming out. This doesn’t look like a new model but rather a refresh of the Mavic Air 2. Let’s take a look at what we expect to see.
Better Camera on the DJI Air 2S
The DJI Mavic Air 2 camera is excellent. It is the first Mavic that is capable of shooting 4K at 6o fps. With the Quad Bayer sensor ups the 12 MP photo up to 48 MP. In short, the Quad Bayer sensor multiplies the number of pixels by 4. While this sounds great it still falls a little short of the Mavic 2 Pro 20 MP camera with its 1″ sensor.
The good news is the DJI Air 2S will have a 1-inch, 20 MP sensor just like the Mavic 2 Pro. It isn’t Hasselblad branded but it will certainly be an upgrade over the DJI Mavic Air 2 camera. This camera is capable of shooting 5.4K video. That most certainly is an upgrade and is the first DJI consumer drone capable of more than 4K video.
Air 2S Occusync 3.0
The DJI FPV drone had some excellent technology inside of it, whether or not you were a fan. We expect to see a lot of similar improvements with the Air 2S. The most significant of these is the Occusync 3.o transmission system. Occusync 3 gave the DJI FPV drone almost zero lag and incredible control and precision. We are excited to see that tech carry over to the Air 2S.
Other DJI FPV carryovers
In addition to the Occysync 3.0 we expect to see a few other things from the DJI FPV drone. The first is that it should work with the DJI Goggles V2. People have been asking for compatible goggles and it makes sense for the Air 2S to comply with that.
In addition to that we see DJI has incorporated ADS-B receivers. Much like the FPV drone we can gett alerts when other aircraft are in the area. This is a great safety feature.
The sensors in the front will help the DJI Air 2S see and avoid obstacles. It is getting the upgraded active track and obstacle avoidance.
DJI Motion Controller
Another thing we expect to see is compatibility with the DJI Motion Controller. The motion controller is fun to use and incredibly intuitive. However, it seems out of place on the super agile and fast FPV drone. It would be a great tool for beginners on drones like the Air 2S or Mini 2.
Flight Time and Range
DJI almost always seems to squeeze out a little more flight time and range on each iteration of their drones. By tuning them a little and making them more efficient we think we might get a minute or two increase in flight time. The Air 2S should see 34minutes of flight time. The range is stated to be 12,000 meters. That’s almost 7.5 miles!
When can we expect the DJI Air 2S?
The Air 2S should be released in late Spring or early Summer. While it is a moderate upgrade it should be a good one. Personally, I’d look to see if the Mavic Air 2 drops in price and I’d snatch that drone up. I’ll bet the Air 2S is a bit price and my guess is that it checks in at $999. We will see.
