Review: Hisingy Mach 500 – A Fun Beginner Drone Built for Kids

The Hisingy Mach 500 is making waves as one of the most approachable and kid-friendly drones on the market today. Priced at around $50, this lightweight, colorful quadcopter offers just enough functionality and fun to keep young pilots engaged without overwhelming them with complex features. I recently tested this drone with my 10 year old nephew Marshall to make sure it was as kid friendly as it claimed.

From the moment it’s unboxed, the Mach 500’s design stands out. With LED lights and an aesthetic that strongly resembles an X-Wing from Star Wars, it’s visually exciting—something that clearly resonated with Marshall. The packaging even includes a comic book-style backstory, reinforcing Hisingy’s commitment to making drones fun and imaginative for kids.

In terms of performance, the Mach 500 is easy to set up and fly. Marshall, with only limited drone experience, was able to get it airborne in minutes. The drone features an optical flow sensor for improved stability, and a “circle fly” mode adds a playful twist to flight patterns. While it doesn’t include a traditional camera, the bottom-facing optical sensor aids in indoor hovering and positioning helping make it a stable drone for beginners.

The drone’s brushed motors are inexpensive and replaceable—great for beginners who are likely to crash. At just 82 grams, it doesn’t require FAA registration, making it even more accessible for families.

However, the Mach 500 isn’t without its downsides. As seen during the test flight, it struggles in windy conditions, drifting easily when outdoors. That said, its lightweight build and propeller guards make it a safe option for indoor flying.

Overall, the Hisingy Mach 500 is an ideal choice for kids or absolute beginners looking for an affordable, easy-to-fly drone. With its thoughtful design, simple controls, and playful presentation, it delivers a fun introduction to drone piloting—without the stress or steep learning curve. While it may not satisfy experienced flyers, it’s a solid entry-level option for young adventurers ready to take to the skies.
