The new JJRC H61 Spotlight is a small foldable selfie drone for under $50. In a lot of ways, it is very similar to the JJRC Elfie, but it has some important upgrades. If you want a small, portable drone that is stable and has an HD camera for under $50 then take a look at the H61 Spotlight from JJRC.
What is the JJRC H61?
The JJRC H61 is another small portable selfie drone. The arms fold inward making it easy to take with you. The H61 has a 720p HD camera that will take decent pictures and video. The video won’t be stabilized, so you’ll have to fly slow and steady to avoid choppy images. The camera angle is adjustable so you can point it up or down prior to takeoff. This is a decent drone for $50, but don’t expect high-quality images like you would get with a DJI quadcopter.
JJRC H61 Spotlight Features
The H61 has a handful of nice features and upgrades from previous selfie drones. The best improvement is the 720p camera. This drone also features altitude hold as well as optical flow. It is fairly stable, but honestly we expected more out of a drone with optical flow. Don’t plan to fly this drone outdoors in any kind of wind.
While the camera quality is pretty good the fact that it relies on WiFi and transmission to your phone hurts the quality a bit. Plus it doesn’t help that there is no image stabilization to smooth out the vibrations from the drone. Still images will be much better quality than videos.
Optical flow utilizes a downward facing camera to help the drone maintain its position while hovering. The altitude hold helps to make the H61 even more stable. It is a stable flyer, especially indoors, but won’t handle wind particularly well. It may not be quite as stable as the Tello, but it does a good job.
JJRC H61 Controls
The H61 features one key takeoff and landing and can do flips with the push of a button. It is controlled via WiFi through a free app on your phone. You’ll be able to record the video directly to your smartphone while in flight and can easily share to social media after flying. Flying with a smartphone is convenient but doesn’t allow for the precision and control that a normal remote will provide.
One of the odd things was that it was difficult to be able to access all of the features of this drone. The directions aren’t the best and you have to swipe from the side of the screen to access some of the menus. Taking videos, for example, can only be achieved if you swipe from the left side of the app to have the menu appear. This should have been spelled out in the directions.
Should You Get a JJRC H61?
If you are looking for an inexpensive selfie drone with a 720p camera that won’t break the bank then you should definitely take a look at the JJRC H61.
