Holy Stone HS720R Review: A Familiar Drone with a Few Twists

In the ever-evolving world of drones, the Holy Stone HS720R presents itself as the latest addition to the market. However, as we delve deeper into its origins, it becomes evident that this drone is not entirely new. In fact, it was originally introduced as the MJX Bugs 18 Pro in the fall of 2022. Holy Stone has a reputation for rebranding and slightly tweaking drones from other manufacturers, such as MJX and SJRC, before offering them to consumers on Amazon. While this may raise some questions about its authenticity, it also comes with the assurance of solid customer service and the convenience of Amazon purchasing.

Fortunately, the MJX Bugs 18 Pro (or Holy Stone HS720R) falls into the former category, making it a promising contender in this price range.

One of the standout features of the HS720R is its robust set of specifications. It boasts a full three-axis gimbal, offering excellent stability and smooth footage capture. While the 4K video may not be professional quality it is good enough for most people. With a commendable 26-minute flight time and a range of nearly two miles, it provides ample opportunities for capturing aerial shots and exploring your surroundings. Additionally, it offers intelligent flight modes, including the ever-popular follow-me mode and a point-of-interest mode for circling an object.

The camera quality on this drone is good, though not quite at a professional-grade level. It records in 4K at 30 frames per second, and there’s also the option for Full HD at 60 frames per second, ideal for slow-motion enthusiasts. However, some users have noted that the camera may oversaturate colors a bit. It’s also important to utilize an SD card for recording, as it provides superior video quality compared to recording directly to your phone.

One notable downside is the time-lapse feature, which, despite its name, doesn’t quite deliver true time-lapse photography. Instead, it records regular videos, which can be edited to mimic time-lapse effects. Fortunately, Holy Stone has indicated plans for firmware updates to address this issue.

In summary, the Holy Stone HS720R is a drone with a slightly mysterious past, but its performance and features speak for themselves. It’s a solid choice for beginners and enthusiasts looking for a reliable drone under $400. However, keep an eye on potential price drops or explore other options like the DJI Mini SE2 or the C-Fly Faith Mini if you’re willing to invest a bit more or want specific features. Ultimately, whether this drone is the right fit for you depends on your preferences, needs, and budget.
