With the Osmo Action DJI has officially entered the action camera market. The DJI Osmo Pocket was a success and now they have created a competitor to the GoPro Hero 7. The DJI Osmo Action is a Hero style action camera. It has dual displays, is waterproof, shockproof and dustproof. It can even shoot electronically stabilized 4K videos at 30 fps. Will this put an end to GoPro’s reign as the king of action cameras? We will see.
DJI Osmo Action
The Osmo Action will retail for $349. It is a 12 MP camera that uses an F2.8 lens and has a 1/2.3″ sensor. The dual displays will be useful for vloggers and the rear display is touch screen capable. The Osmo Action has two microphones and the ability to use an external microphone if you so choose. You can capture time-lapse videos as well as slow motion (1080p at 240 fps). The Osmo Action is capable of High Dynamic Range Video but doing so will not be electronically stabilized. The electronic image stabilization is called RockSteady and multiple reviews of it show it doing an excellent job of smoothing out bumpy footage.
DJI Mimo App
The DJI Osmo Action can be used as a stand-alone action camera but like the DJI Osmo Pocket can also be paired to the DJI Mimo app via WiFi for a larger screen and more capabilities. The DJI Mimo App can even be used to do video editing.
Should you get a DJI Osmo Action?
The DJI Osmo Action definitely looks like a contender in the action camera market. The biggest advantage it has over the GoPro Hero is the dual screens. That looks to be a very useful tool for vloggers especially, but I still believe the Osmo Pocket is the better tool for most vloggers. I think the Osmo Action will be an excellent tool for any action junkie out there. However, I am most excited to use it on drones that do not come with gimbals or good HD cameras. This is likely a much better tool. I’ve put my Osmo Pocket on a drone before, but it just isn’t the best tool for the job. This Osmo Action will be an excellent option with its RockSteady EIS.
