DJI has been experimenting with ultra-small drones for a few years now, and the DJI Neo 2 might be the most interesting result yet. At first glance it looks like a simple beginner drone. It’s tiny, easy to fly, and designed for quick shots. But once you dig a little deeper—and especially once you add the optional transmission module—you realize this little drone can do a lot more than expected.
If you’ve watched some of my recent videos or read my posts on Half Chrome, you know I’ve been testing the Neo 2 quite a bit. It’s one of those drones that keeps surprising me.

Neo 2 vs the Original DJI Neo
The original DJI Neo was a fun idea but pretty limited. It was basically a flying camera designed for selfies and quick automated shots. It connected to your phone over Wi-Fi, which meant range was pretty short and control options were limited.
The Neo 2 improves almost everything.
You still get the easy palm launch and simple automated flight modes, but DJI upgraded the camera, stabilization, and flight performance. It’s still incredibly beginner friendly, but it feels like a much more capable drone.
Where the original Neo was basically a toy with a good camera, the Neo 2 starts to feel like a real tool.
Range and the Transmission Module
Out of the box, the Neo 2 can be flown using your phone just like the original. That makes it incredibly easy for beginners to get started.
But the real magic happens when you add the digital transmission module. DJI calls it the Neo 2 Transreceiver, even though it is sending, not receiving data.
Once that module is attached, the Neo 2 can connect to DJI controllers and goggles instead of just a phone. That means you’re no longer limited to short Wi-Fi range. In ideal conditions, the transmission system can reach up to about 10 km.
That’s an enormous jump compared to the original Neo. Instead of being a short-range selfie drone, it suddenly becomes something you can actually explore with.
It also opens the door to different flight styles. With the right setup you can use goggles, traditional DJI controllers, or even FPV-style controls. That versatility is something you normally only see on much more expensive drones.
How It Compares to Other DJI Drones
The Neo 2 sits in a really interesting place in DJI’s lineup.
DJI Flip
The Flip is designed more for social media creators and quick automated shots. It’s simple and fun, but it doesn’t have the same modular expandability that the Neo 2 offers.
DJI Mini 4 and Mini 4K
These are still the better options if your main goal is aerial photography or cinematic video. The Mini drones have larger sensors, longer flight times, and stronger wind resistance.
But they’re also bigger and less spontaneous. The Neo 2 is the kind of drone you can throw in a backpack or even a jacket pocket.
Original DJI Neo
The Neo 2 is simply better in almost every category—range potential, camera performance, and overall flexibility.
Why the Neo 2 Is So Interesting
What makes the Neo 2 stand out is how many roles it can fill.
It can be:
- A beginner drone
- A travel drone
- A quick content creator drone
- A lightweight FPV training platform
- Or even a long-range flyer with the module installed
That kind of versatility is rare in a drone this small. This is a drone that can do it all and won’t bankrupt you at the same time.
